Bereavement Support

Take Heart Bereavement Support Program

The R. S. Kane Funeral Home is privileged to make available the Take Heart Bereavement Support Program.  It is offered to our families and to the community at large, at no charge. The service is designed to help make the journey through grief a little easier. This is not grief therapy; however, participants of groups have found that grief shared is grief made more bearable. We are encouraged by the interest shown in this program.

Our next Take Heart Bereavement Support Program is a six week group that will start Thursday January 8th, 2015.  For more information and to register for the group, please contact the Take Heart Office at 416-221-1232.

Groups give the opportunity to talk with others who are experiencing the sorrow, pain and loneliness experienced after the death of someone loved. They take place several times a year with each session lasting for six weeks. Trained facilitators of the groups understand, and can explain, the feelings of loss. Their knowledge has been acquired through education, personal loss and, more importantly, from being companions of and listening to the real experts, those who grieve.

"Tea and Conversation"  is a program designed to provide a short respite for those who grieve.  Drop in between 1:30 p.m.- 3:00 p.m.every Thursday.  The above-mentioned informal events are held at 10 Pleasant Avenue. You may park in the north end of the funeral home parking lot and walk north across Pleasant Avenue to the first house.  We hope to see you there.

Companionship is provided through telephone follow-up and by one-to-one visits in the library at the funeral home.

Special groups are arranged as required for adults grieving the death of parents and children as well as teens grieving the death of parents, grandparents and siblings.

We are pleased to suggest names of professionals in areas of bereavement to those who request these services.

We are privileged to respond to requests from clubs, churches and schools, to provide information on the grieving process and ways of helping those who grieve.

Each May, the Kane Day Take Heart Bereavement Seminar offers an opportunity to the community to learn from experts in the field of grief and bereavement. Past presenters have been Mr. Doug Manning, Dr. Darcie Sims, Mr. Todd Van Beck, Dr. Alan D. Wolfelt, and most recently Dr. Harold Ivan Smith.

Thank you to all who attended Kane Day in 2014.  Nancy Weil was well received and did a wonderful job of showing us all how humour can be a such a large part of the healing process.   Kane Day has traditionally been the first Friday in May, albeit, that would suggest the next Kane Day be Friday May 1st, 2015, This year we will experience Kane Day at a new venue.  Attendees are directed to and will be greeted at The Peoples Church, 374 Sheppard Ave E, Toronto, ON M2N 3B6 (Just west of Bayview Ave.).  Our Keynote speaker will be announced soon.  Please check back or contact the funeral home, 416-221-1159 as the date draws near.

In November, our You Will Survive The Holidays booklet and an invitation to our Seasonal Reflections service are mailed to all families served by R.S. Kane during the year.

At Four O'clock p.m. (4 p.m.) on the first Saturday of December (December 6, 2021) we host our annual Seasonal Reflections Service.  This non-denominational service includes words of comfort, music and an opportunity for all to participate in honouring and remembering those, so much in their thoughts, during the holiday season.

Call in November to ask about details for this years service or reserve seating for you and your family
