Condolences

Condolence From: Rob and Lise van der Bliek
Condolence: Our condolences to Doug, Catharine, Martine and others. Your father and my father met at the engineering school in Delft in the early 1950s and became lifelong friends. Jaap was closely involved with our family during their early years in Canada, before he met Sue, and I was able to become briefly involved with your family some twenty years later when I moved to Toronto. Your house was a base for me during the late 1970s and I have very fond memories of dinners and pool visits and stimulating conversation. I last saw your father at my father's funeral in 2003 and we had a good chat about this and that, reminding me a little bit of the discussions he used to have with my father. Both were men of the world, intensely interested and engaged with everything they read and heard about. They are and will continue to be missed.

Condolence From: Hugh Liu
Condolence: I would like to offer my deepest condolence to Dr. de Leeuw's family. I got to know Jaap since I started my academic career at the UTIAS in 2000. I am always grateful of his encouragement, support, wisdom and mentoring to a new and rather naive faculty member. I will always remember his open mindedness, integrity, kindness and availability to students and colleagues. Due to a trip arranged in the week of March 11, I won't be able to attend the funeral home to pay my respect in person. Hugh Liu, Associate Professor and Associate Director, UTIAS

Condolence From: Carrie Cockburn
Condolence: I was so lucky to know Jacob, to see his irrepressible curiosity in almost anything new. To hear he had decided to learn to play the piano after retirement and taking lessons alongside 8-year olds was very much how he approached life. I will miss his lovely smile and gentle nature but in his children and his grandchildren I see shades of him live on. Many thoughts go to his family and those that loved him. Our family was honored to know this lovely man. Carrie Cockburn, Timothy, Owen and Finn Hellum
