Obituary of Sister Kathleen Kelly, SSS

A Sister of Social Service for 43 years, in her 67th year of life, suddenly and peacefully returned to God on December 26, 2020 while doing ministry in the Philippines. Sister Kathleen will be lovingly remembered by her religious community and her family—Patricia and Ron Hancock, Michelle Joy, and Peter Kelly; as well as her nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, friends, colleagues, and religious congregations across Canada. Sister Kathleen was a missionary at heart. She loved to go to places where people were in need. She had a very generous heart and spirit and was a woman of deep faith. She loved the Philippines and so she was gifted by our God to die peacefully and in a place that she loved. She lived out her motto: “You received without charge, give without charge” (Mt. 10:8) wherever the Spirit asked her to go. Sister Kathleen’s commitment to social justice was always a focal point in service to others. Her many ministries over the years included parish work in Hamilton, Calgary and Toronto; and work with Social Services and the Catholic Youth Organization in Toronto. She was a resource person at the FCJ Centre in Calgary; and Executive Secretary at the CRC-O; and worked at Holy Spirit Centre in Hamilton; Catholic Charities in Toronto and the Toronto Marriage Tribunal. She was one of the founding members of the Association of Treasurers of Religious Institutes (ATRI) and of the National Association of Formation/Vocation Directors (NAVFD), and was involved in various projects and boards. Sister Kathleen was also the Vocation/Formation Director of our community the Sisters of Social Service, a SSS Federation delegate, council member and assistant to the General Director and the community’s treasurer. Sister Kathleen’s energetic and generous spirit will be missed by all who were touched by her presence and enthusiasm for life. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Patrick’s Church (131 McCaul St, Toronto). The urn containing Sister Kathleen’s cremated remains will be at the entrance of the Church at 10:00 a.m. and Mass of the Resurrection will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2016. A private interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Hamilton, ON at a later date. Condolences may be made at www.rskane.ca. In lieu of flowers and in memory of Sister Kathleen, donations may be made to the Sisters of Social Service to assist their ministries in the Philippines.
