Obituary of Robert Sutherland
Robert (Bob) Sutherland passed away suddenly at home with his family by his side on February 26, 2021 in his 89th year. Born on February 6, 1928, Bob was the son of the late G. Marshall and Doreen Sutherland (Lavell). He was the beloved husband of Jackie (Varcoe) for 59 years and loving father of Karen (Corey), Roberta (Steve) and Brian. He was a devoted grandfather to Michael, Meaghan, Stuart, Sarah and Scott. Loving brother to Marguerite Hyde (Farrell) and brother-in-law to the late Bruce Varcoe. He will be missed by his nieces and nephew and great-nieces and nephews. Bob grew up in Grand-Mère, Quebec and moved to Toronto in his teens. He graduated from the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the bar in 1955. He practiced corporate law and was a well-respected partner at the law firm Fasken Martineau for over 50 years. He volunteered his services and was legal counsel and secretary for Cystic Fibrosis Canada for over 45 years. Bob received the Canadian Commemorative Medal and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee medal for his community involvement. Bob was an avid skier and golfer. He was a founding member of the Georgian Peaks Ski Club and the family has many great memories of the time spent at the ski chalet and on ski trips to Colorado. Summer vacations were enjoyed at the family cottage on the Ottawa River and camping coast to coast. Bob played golf for most of his life and was a member of the Sleepy Hollow Golf Club where he got his hole in one in 1997. Bob and Jackie enjoyed travelling and were very fortunate to visit all seven continents. Bob was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1994 and managed it well despite the challenges. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson Canada (www.parkinson.ca) or the charity of your choice.
